Dickinson of Winscales

Appendix:  Dickinson of Winscales in Workington

George Dickinson of Winscales (probate 1663/4) is almost certainly the son of John Dickinson of Streetgate. There are four reasons for thinking so:

  • the Streetgate George is mentioned in the will of Isabel Pearson of Mockerkin, so we know he survived childhood;
  • a  David and Thomas Dickinson appear in his probate inventory. David and Thomas were the youngest of the Streetgate siblings;
  • he named his son Daniel, a family name;
  • his children, as minors, were the right age for the Streetgate George.

He must have been at Winscales through his wife Elizabeth. A Matthew Birkett and William Fisher were bondsmen in his probate (suggesting a family relationship), and the Fishers lived at Winscales.

He left two minors, George and Daniel. George died in 1699, apparently without any children.

George Dickinson of Winskails, buryed Sept 16 1699

George's death looks to have been sudden and unexpected. He has only in his forties, he spoke his will and there is no signature (he was literate, like his brothers, with books listed in his inventory). A farm accident of some sort perhaps.
